Freeman Regional Health Services offers several therapy specialties to meet the health care needs for our community.
Physical Therapy
Our Physical Therapy team works with patients to develop, maintain and restore maximum movement and functional ability throughout their life. Movement and function can be threatened by ageing, injury, pain, diseases, disorders, conditions and/or environmental factors. Physical Therapists teach patients that functional movement is central to what it means to be healthy.
The aim of physical therapy is to relieve pain, help you move better or strengthen weakened muscles. Another important goal is to show patients what they can do themselves to improve their own health.
Dry Needling Therapy
Dry needling is a treatment technique that is used to treat muscle pain and dysfunction. It’s used by physical therapists and other providers with advanced training and has been growing in popularity for the past decade. Dry needling uses similar needles to acupuncture but has different assessment and treatment techniques, often going deeper into the muscle. Dry needling targets specific points in muscles that may be leading to pain and dysfunction. It can help improve muscle mobility, strength, coordination, and decrease pain. Dry needling can be very effective in treating headaches, numbness and tingling, shoulder pain, hip pain, and low back pain. It is used with other physical therapy treatment techniques to decrease pain and improve function. Watch our Dry Needling video here.
Lymphedema Therapy
Lymphedema therapy is a treatment that aims to relieve swelling in the arms and legs by moving lymphatic fluid out of the affected limbs. It can also help prevent additional swelling. Lymphedema is a chronic condition that happens when something affects your lymphatic system. While there is no cure, Certified Physical Therapist, Rebecca Schultz, can help ease its symptoms.
Pelvic Health Therapy
Pelvic health therapy, also known as pelvic floor therapy, is a non-invasive treatment that aims to improve the health of the pelvic floor by strengthening the muscles and nerves in the area. It can help with pelvic pain and dysfunction caused by muscle weakness and joint alignment issues.
Blood Flow Restriction Training
Blood Flow Restriction Training, commonly referred to as BFR training or BFR (may also be called occlusion training or Kaatsu training), involves the application of a specialized tourniquet cuff to the proximal portion of an exercising arm or leg to reduce arterial inflow and restrict venous outflow into the limb. Exercising in this manner allows the use of low intensity exercise to elicit positive adaptations in muscle size, strength, or endurance typically associated with much heavier loads or higher intensities. The application of BFR has great potential to improve exercise prescription in a rehabilitation setting since it’s common to see patients that have exercise loading or intensity limitations due to injury, surgery, pain, or deconditioning.
Parkinson's Management
Parkinson’s disease can’t be cured, but there are many ways to manage its symptoms. Treatments can vary from person to person, depending on their specific symptoms and how well certain treatments work. Recent advances in basic and clinical science research suggest exercise and learning approaches may protect, repair, and optimize function in persons with Parkinson disease (PD). Our facility also offers the LSVT BIG and LSVT LOUD programs for speech and motor symptoms. Our therapists can work with you to help determine the program that is the best fit for each person at each stage of disease.
Elizabeth Waltner is certified in PWR!Moves to develop personalized therapy and exercise plans adaptable for people with Parkinson’s of any disease severity.
Occupational Therapy
Occupational therapy (OT) is a branch of health care that helps people of all ages who have physical, sensory, or cognitive problems. OT can help them regain independence in all areas of their lives. Occupational therapists help with barriers that affect a person’s emotional, social, and physical needs. Occupational Therapist services from Avera Integrated Therapy Services (Mitchell, SD) are available through contracted services at Freeman Regional.
Speech Therapy
Speech therapy helps children and adults improve their communication and language skills. No matter what’s affecting your ability to speak or communicate effectively, speech therapy can improve your quality of life. Talk to a healthcare provider about a speech therapy evaluation if you or your child has trouble talking, hearing or using language.
